The optical fiber is often used a TOSLINK (i.e. TOSHIBA LINK) line, which is the Toshiba technology (the TOSHIBA) developed. An angle-shaped terminal on the back of the DVD player, the upper part of which is marked "OPTICAL" is the optical fiber output terminal. The optical fiber connector may be electrically isolated to prevent digital noise transmitted through the ground, help to improve the signal to noise ratio DAC (digital-analog conversion). However, the signal connected by the optical fiber has to undergo two conversions between the transmitter and the receiver, which may cause time-base jitter errors, thereby affecting the sound quality. Commonly used materials for optical fiber cables are plastic, quartz and glass, among which glass optical fiber cables have the best performance but are expensive.
Most DVD players have optical fiber output terminals, but the general DVD players do not come with a fiber optic cable, which makes the optical fiber output function of the DVD player seem to be a decoration. Moreover, fiber optic cables are currently rare in the audio-visual market, usually only Sony's POC-15A, etc. With the popularity of DVD players, fiber optic cables will inevitably enter the homes of consumers.
Like the optical fiber output, the coaxial digital output terminal of the DVD player is also the connection terminal for outputting digital audio signals. Connect it to the AV amplifier with coaxial input terminal through the coaxial cable, you can get the acoustic effect.
On the back of the DVD player, a RCA terminal (usually called a lotus socket) labeled COAXIAL near the fiber output terminal is the coaxial output terminal. Coaxial output terminals and optical fiber output terminals are generally located on the back of the right end of the DVD body. The coaxial cable used to connect the DVD player and the coaxial terminal of the AV amplifier is 75Ω, which is actually very similar to the AV cable that we are all familiar with. It has a wide transmission band and good digital audio transmission. Generally speaking, the audio quality of the coaxial terminal output is similar to that of the optical fiber output. Therefore, some DVD models only have a digital coaxial output and save the fiber output function. Such as Xiaxin DVD8058B, Dihe DK-300, Hongtu GK-620, Xianke DVD-830, DVD-1500, DVD-2200 and so on. The DVD machines such as Desai DS-2000, Hongtu GK-580 and Malata DVD-N980 only have optical fiber output and no coaxial output function.
