Tokyo, Japan, October 26, 2015 – Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE:6723), a leading global semiconductor solutions provider, today announced the availability of the RL78/F15 family of low-power 16-bit microcontrollers for body control modules (BCM) , air conditioning, electric seats and other automotive control systems. A sub-family of the RL78 family of microcontrollers, the RL78/F15 family delivers industry-leading low power, high performance and CAN communication with independent control and diagnostics. This family of products is fully compatible with the RL78/F13 and RL78/F14 families.
The RL78/F15 family includes a new 144-pin package; products with 48 or more pins are equipped with up to 512 KB of on-chip flash. Together with the RL78/F13 and RL78/F14 families, a total of 127 products are available, ranging from 20 pins to 144 pins, allowing system manufacturers to select the microcontroller that best meets their system requirements. The RL78/F15 family of product software is compatible with RL78/F13 and RL78/F14, and system manufacturers can choose these products to meet the functional expansion requirements of future products. New performance easily solves the problem of insufficient storage capacity or pin count.

Key features of the new RL78/F15 family:
(1) After the expansion of the product range, system manufacturers are provided with 127 kinds of 16-bit microcontroller products for automotive control systems. The RL78/F15 family of products includes 144-pin packages with a memory capacity of up to 512 KB. Combined with the existing RL78/F13 and RL78/F14 families, Renesas Automotive Control Systems is the industry's most extensive lineup of 16-bit microcontrollers with pin counts ranging from 20 to 144, system manufacturers. A microcontroller can be found that fully satisfies the requirements of each automotive control system.
(2) Fully compatible with RL78/F13 and RL78/F14, simplifying software migration and helping to shorten development and certification time
The RL78/F15 family uses the same CPU core as the RL78/F13 and RL78/F14 families, so the three are fully compatible, simplifying software migration. Therefore, when the electronic control system needs to be upgraded, or the system needs to add or change functions, resulting in insufficient ROM and RAM capacity or pin count, the RL78/F15 family of products can quickly respond to this change in demand. In addition, the RL78/F15 family of products incorporates Renesas' proven and mass-produced manufacturing process technology, which significantly shortens the certification process.
(3) Enhanced communication functions, including two CAN channels; ideal for automotive control systems such as BCM With two CAN channels for independent control and diagnostics. In addition, there are three channels of hardware LIN communication modules, ideal for centralized control applications such as body control modules (BCM). The RL78/F15 development tool chain includes Renesas' original CS+ integrated development environment, IAR EWRL78 Workbench®, Renesas E1 on-chip debug emulator and Renesas IEBUCE full-featured in-circuit emulator.
Pricing and Availability There are 36 products available for the RL78/F15 family of samples. Prices vary depending on the package. For example, a RL78/F15 sample with a 48-pin package and 512 KB of on-chip flash is priced at $7. The RL78/F15 family of products is scheduled to begin mass production in July 2016 and is expected to produce 1 million pieces per month in July 2017.
