According to the data as of the end of September, the total number of mobile phone users of the three basic telecommunications companies reached 1.39 billion, almost reaching the average level of one mobile phone per person. In terms of personal mobile phone traffic usage, it continued to grow. In September, the average mobile Internet access traffic reached 2007M, a year-on-year increase of 140%. For the first time, it exceeded the threshold of 2000M, and the monthly average traffic usage was nearly 2G.

The reporter noted that since 2016, the mobile Internet traffic contribution of the three major operators has surpassed the traditional business for the first time and has become the largest source of income. The era of operators making money by voice and text messages has passed, and the industry has fully entered the era of traffic operation competition. This is directly reflected in the fact that operators have continuously launched large-flow packages and customized mobile phone cards since the first half of this year. According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the total volume of telecom services from January to September was 1,820.9 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 63%. The revenue from telecom business was 962.4 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 6%. Among them, mobile data and mobile Internet business revenue was 412.6 billion yuan, up 28.1% year-on-year, accounting for 42.9% of telecom business revenue, driving revenue growth of telecommunications business by 10 percentage points.

Behind the surge in data revenue is the increasing demand for user traffic. From the first time in December 2016, the average mobile Internet traffic usage exceeded 1G to reach 1088M, and the average monthly traffic consumption per household has maintained a growth rate of 10%. In September of this year, the average mobile Internet access traffic reached 2007M, an increase of 140% over the same period last year. In the first nine months, domestic mobile Internet access traffic reached 15.4 billion G, a year-on-year increase of 148.3%. Among them, the traffic volume through mobile phones reached 14.6 billion G, an increase of 162.3%.

Telecom industry analyst Chen Zhigang said that operators' large-scale investment in mobile broadband networks brings a quality online experience. Traffic becomes the first source of revenue mainly due to the outbreak of mobile Internet applications, especially high-traffic applications such as WeChat, Weibo, live broadcast, video, online navigation, and games.

Those who benefit from increased user traffic demand are the three major telecom operators. According to the financial report, China Mobile's wireless Internet revenue reached 187.7 billion yuan in the first half of this year, accounting for more than 50% of the communication service revenue ratio. The reporter found that China Mobile's wireless Internet revenue in 2016 increased by 43.5% compared with 2015, accounting for 46.2% of the communication service revenue. For the first time in the year, it exceeded the sum of voice calls and short and multimedia messages, making it the largest source of income.

China Unicom has clearly pointed out in this semi-annual report that it focuses on power flow management and marketing transformation. In the first half of this year, Unicom's mobile Internet data traffic increased by 325.7% year-on-year, and mobile Internet revenue reached 429. 100 million yuan, 4G users monthly average flow of 3330M.

China Telecom's 2017 mid-year report showed that mobile Internet revenue was the company's largest source of revenue growth, with a year-on-year growth of 35.2% in the first half of the year, accounting for 26.0% of service revenue, up 5.5 percentage points year-on-year. On the other hand, voice revenue accounted for 19.2% of service revenue, down 4.3 percentage points year-on-year.

In an interview with reporters, telecom industry analyst Ma Jihua said that 4G networks have become mainstream, and the future 5G traffic business is also the focus. Traffic is the number one source of revenue and operators are happy to see it. The proportion of future traffic revenue will only be greater.

Competing for "flow cards"

Traffic revenue has surpassed services such as voice calls and SMS, which has provoked the growth of telecom operators' revenue, and the traffic business has become the main operating competition for the three major operators.

The competition on traffic operations is more motivating, and the three major operators have successively joined the traffic competition station. These "customized flow cards" can be roughly divided into two categories. One type is concentrated in well-known mobile phone applications, videos, live broadcasts, etc., and can enjoy the free traffic service when using the app, represented by Tencent King Card. The other type is the subsidized flow card to obtain the flow after completing each order, such as Ant King Xiaobao Card, Dabao Card.

Since 2016, China Unicom has successively launched “customized mobile phone cards” with Tencent, Alibaba, Baidu, Weibo, ICBC, Alipay and other companies, focusing on large traffic and low prices, attracting a large number of new users from the Internet channel. . Such businesses quickly seized the traffic market. According to the data released by China Unicom, Tencent and Xiaowang cards contributed more than 20 million new users in the first half of 2017. China Mobile, which has many users, has not yet launched a “flow custom card” that cooperates with Internet companies. It only has exclusive large-traffic packages that cooperate with iQiyi, Tencent Video and Youku. The average mobile usage of China Mobile is much lower than the industry average. The average monthly traffic of mobile Internet users in the first three quarters was only 1.2G.

Chen Zhigang told reporters that China's communication demand scene is complex and diverse, bringing market space to a large number of functional machines or early Macs that only support 2G. This is the reason why a large number of 2G users exist. With the gradual withdrawal of 2G communications, 2G to 4G is the main job of operators in the past two years.
