Researchers at the University of Manchester in the UK and the Autonomous University of Madrid in Spain used floor sensors and high-resolution cameras to collect nearly 20,000 footsteps from 127 people, build databases, and develop computer models for biometrics.
The British "Daily Mail" quoted the research project leader, Reyes of Manchester University, on May 29th: "Everyone walks with about 24 different factors and actions, forming a unique walking style for each person, monitoring these actions. Thus it is possible to identify a person's identity, just like a fingerprint or a retina scan."
The results of the airport security inspections, workplace and home environment show that the system is highly accurate in identifying identities. The results of the study are published in the Journal of Modeling and Machine Intelligence of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
Reyes said that this technology can also be applied to medical systems to help doctors identify patients with cognitive decline or mental illness.
