The theme of Wuxi Grand Theatre is based on site selection. The artificial peninsula on the north shore of Taihu Lake and the nearby road bridge make this building very similar to the Sydney Opera House. The building that stands here is thus an impressive architectural landmark, with a theatre as high as 50 meters, like a huge sculpture rising from the terrace. The eight huge winged roofs extend far beyond the façade, giving the building a general appearance while protecting the building from the scorching sun.
The concept of architecture is unique: thousands of LED lights are installed in the steel wing structure, which changes the color of the wings according to the nature of the performance. This is achievable because the underside of the wings is covered with a perforated aluminum plate. Another major feature is the “forest†consisting of 50 beams of light, each of which is 9 meters high. Starting from the main entrance plaza, it supports the roof of the central hall and extends to the entrance to the lake.
There is a strong Chinese character throughout the building: the use of bamboo, a traditional and modern Chinese material. In recent years, the new production and use of bamboo has increased, and designers have been able to cover more than 15,000 sturdy bamboo members to cover the main opera halls, all of which are individually tailored to the needs of sound and architectural image.
A Finnish-inspired material was also used in the project: nearly 20,000 specially designed glass bricks covered the curved walls of the opera auditorium in the lakeside lobby. Finnish specialties, lakes and ice cubes are inspired by the designers.
PES-Architects Architects' early international projects include the St. Mary's Concert Hall in Germany and Vantaa Airport in Helsinki, Finland. The project in China also has a 192-meter-high multi-purpose building in Chengdu, which is currently under construction. This is the first prize of an international architectural design competition in 2009.
