The safety and security of the working environment has always been the most important issue in many industries. The startup SolePower was inspired to design a smart charging shoe that can be charged automatically.
The shoe can be implanted with different types of sensors at the same time to track information such as location and temperature. In fact, installing sensors in the workplace is nothing new, but sensors' batteries have always been an important issue; this SolePower-designed shoe just solves the problem.
Each step of this shoe can be charged. According to the company, the power generated after walking for two hours can support an iPhone call for one hour. In addition, various types of sensors that can be added also make shoes more versatile. For example, adding GPS sensors can track the location of workers; gas companies can add sensors to detect leaks; and companies that need to send employees to cold climate regions can add thermometers to monitor employees' risk of frostbite.
At present, the U.S. military also expressed great interest in the shoes and is testing whether the technology can help soldiers reduce the number of spare batteries they carry. In an interview with CNBC, SolePower’s chief executive Hahna Alexander said that in a typical day’s mission, a soldier needs to carry a spare battery that weighs 20 pounds, so the army is very happy to find a suitable way to reduce the soldier’s weight.
In addition, SolePower also targets companies in the oil, gas and construction industries and expects them to use the shoes to increase the safety and efficiency of their staff. At the same time, the company is developing another version designed for use by firefighters.
