Road lighting function
When we think of road lighting, we usually think of highways first. However, the range of road lighting is very broad, covering the streets of cities and villages. There is also an increasing demand for design and materials used. One example is the use of stainless steel poles and the increasing use of colored poles and luminaires. But road lighting has other features, such as helping people navigate in unfamiliar environments, illuminating road signs and helping with road lighting.

There has also been considerable progress in the field of light sources. In terms of high pressure sodium lamp technology, the SON-T PIA series has achieved breakthroughs in light efficiency, reliability and longevity. Similarly, QL inductive light source technology is becoming more and more important in public lighting. This trend is driven by the multi-power QL series developed by Philips, and the power selection range is large, and there are more choices in terms of optical flux, color change characteristics and extremely long life. This satisfies the growing demand for light sources not only at a low initial cost but also at a low cost during use. This aspect combined with high quality and high stability makes possible better public services. Ballast
We are all looking forward to a breakthrough in the field of high-pressure discharge lamp ballasts. The latest electronic ballasts for SON light sources are only of concern when used in conjunction with remote control or when there is an irregular mains voltage that causes the light source to expire prematurely. But we are looking forward to the rapid development of high-pressure gas discharge lamp electronic ballasts like fluorescent electronic ballasts.
LED lighting
The field is growing very rapidly. There are already many systems on the market for positioning and signal lighting. We look forward to LEDs competing with traditional lighting systems in a few years. The system mentioned here is intentionally stated, because the new generation of light sources requires a complete set of lamps and power supplies. The latest generation of public lighting products will emerge in a few years. Here, life is still the most important factor.
Dimming
There are many reasons why we do not provide a higher level of illumination than the required illumination, the cost of energy, the extra greenhouse gases caused by unnecessary use, and light pollution. Although public lighting only occupies a very small part of the total energy demand, it can not be ignored, so it is also a topic of public concern during discussion and political decision-making. The methods we used before, like turning off individual light sources or groups of light sources, can easily lead to unintended or even dangerous situations (Figure 2-4). In many cases, regional dimming has proven to be inflexible, as different types of light sources and applications (such as road sign lighting) are connected inside an area. The previous method is no longer used now. We now understand that the dimming system can be successfully used only if each source point can be controlled. Recently, Philips has developed a very practical solution using Chronosense. HPL and SON sources below 400W can be individually dimmed through the system without the need for clocks, cables, transformers and other controls. The energy consumption of each source point can also be rationalized through a remote control system and in a flexible manner.
