National Semiconductor Corporation (NS) announced the industry's first 3W mono Class D single-chip audio amplifier with spread spectrum technology and a built-in boost converter. The Boomer® amplifier, model LM48511, is National's PowerWise® energy-efficient product and the second in a series of Boomer Class D audio amplifiers that the company released after the 1.2W LM48510 chip. Even with low battery voltages, the Boomer Class D audio amplifier family ensures that portable electronics maintain a high level of output power.

The LM48511 amplifier can continuously drive 8-Ohm speaker load with 3W output power, thus increasing the speaker volume of portable electronics, especially for mobile phones equipped with walkie-talkies, portable global positioning systems, and MP3 docking stations with portable speakers. The LM48511 can turn off the independent regulator and amplifier when higher output power is not required, thus further optimizing system power consumption. The compact size of the chip helps reduce printed circuit board area and development costs.

The LM48511 high-efficiency Class D audio power amplifier can operate from 3V to 5V and continuously delivers 2.5W to 3W of output power for 8-Ohm speakers with less than 1% total harmonic distortion and noise. Since the gain of this chip can be set by an external resistor, the gain can be independently controlled by different sources as long as the signal is summed. In addition to the low-power shutdown mode, the LM48511 chip also has output short-circuit and over-temperature protection. A built-in advanced switching/switching noise suppression circuit eliminates the output transient response generated during on/off. Engineers can also use the feedback network in the amplifier to flexibly regulate power supply and manage energy efficiency.
