Japan's Largest Operator Will Use 5G Network VR to Broadcast Tokyo Olympic Games

NTT Docomo is the largest mobile communications operator in Japan. They hope to launch a fifth-generation (5G) mobile network in time to help realize the VR live broadcast of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.

Kazuhiro Yoshizawa, Docomo’s new president and chief executive officer, said: “We want to provide services for 5G networks, which will completely change our existing lifestyle.” Yoshizawa said.

Docomo is considering launching high-definition broadcasts for the Olympic Games and Paralympics for smartphones. By using a 5G network, data transmission speeds can be 15 times faster than current 4G technologies, enabling smoother image distribution. In addition, when 5G technology also enables the real-time transmission of VR video streams, users will be able to use VR Headsets for an immersive viewing experience.

For example, if 360 cameras are assembled on the referees of a football or rugby match and they are connected to them using a 5G network, viewers can enjoy the referee's perspective. For the marathon, Docomo is considering providing a picture taken by the camera along the curb, and the camera will keep pace with the runners.

Yoshizawa said that the 5G network will become the basis for emerging industries. In addition to the live webcast of the Olympic Games, the company also aims to apply 5G networks to the fields of autopilot and telemedicine.
