Fairchild Introduces 12W LED Lighting Reference Design RD226


In order to reduce the design complexity of high-brightness LED lighting, and to reduce the size and overall cost of the system, an increasingly popular design trend is to use a general-purpose AC input LED driving scheme. Recently, Fairchild has developed a reference design RD226 for LED application designers that can implement AC input high-brightness (HB) LED illumination systems without secondary control circuitry and optocouplers. The RD226 is a universal input 12W LED lighting solution that reduces the size of HB LED lamps and saves bill of materials (BOM) costs.

This reference design features an isolated primary-side control off-line AC-DC converter with a flyback topology with a universal input voltage range of 85VRMS to 265VRMS and a line frequency of 50Hz to 60Hz. The RD226 also offers an optional constant current output of 350mA and 700mA, both with a maximum output voltage of 17V. However, the output current can be easily adjusted by changing a resistor. This reference design uses Fairchild's FAN102 device as the primary-side PWM controller to reduce overall system cost and size.

HB LED lighting applications with AC power inputs require a circuit that converts the AC input voltage to a constant current, and in some applications, the design complexity is added because the load must be isolated from the power input. Traditional methods require the use of a flyback converter with a constant current output. In most cases, the secondary side control circuit uses an op amp with a reference circuit, or only a dedicated control IC to regulate the current and send control information to the primary PWM controller via the optocoupler. Fairchild's innovative solutions enable designers to implement AC input LED lighting systems that do not require secondary side control circuitry and optocouplers.
