Wolfson Microelectronics Co., Ltd. has introduced the new WM8900 AudioPlusTM intelligent power solution, a high-performance ultra-low-power audio codec (CODEC) with a Class G reference headphone driver. The WM8900 provides long battery life for portable media players and multimedia handheld devices while reducing the need for external components.In voice mode, the WM8900's static headphone playback consumes less than 6mW and is less than 11mW in Hi-Fi mode, making it ideal for extending battery life in portable audio applications, allowing most of the headphone output with reference. Multi-function multimedia CODEC static power consumption is reduced by more than 25%. When using a normal 300mAH battery, if you use headphones to play music at 2mW/ch power, the WM8900 solution can extend battery life by more than 11 hours.
Wolfson also considered cost and board space issues when designing the WM8900. It uses a reference headphone output, so there is no need to use bulk DC isolation capacitors. The device is available in a small 0.55mm high 40-pin QFN package, making it ideal for small, portable electronic devices.
The WM8900's Class G architecture pushes the headphone amplifier with a two-input level-shifting smart charge pump that produces a positive and negative supply that provides a reference ground for the headphone output. The charge pump auto-control feature keeps the headset in optimal power efficiency during playback, without operator or software intervention.
Class G headphone amplifiers with reference grounds also eliminate multiple sources of burst noise during power-up, power-down, silencing, and muting, providing high-quality audio performance to meet the needs of today's consumers.
Available in a 40-pin 5x5x0.55mm QFN package, the WM8900 is sampling now and is priced at $1.70 in quantities of 10,000.
