3D printed superyacht, the future only takes 90 days?

Use 3D printing technology to print non-inflatable tires, furniture, and hemp food, which you may have heard of. What if you print something bigger with 3D? For example, print a super yacht. Greg Marshall, a shipbuilding engineer, believes that by 2030 it will be possible to use 3D technology to print yachts or superyachts, just by expanding existing 3D printers.

Marshall publishes an article on Boat International's publication Futureyachts, which deals with the issue of 3D printing yachts. He believes that the entire superyacht can be printed using 3D technology, including interiors. Compared with traditional construction techniques, printing with 3D technology has one advantage: it reduces waste.

"Additive Manufacturing has changed the rules of the game," Marshall said. "In the near future, we can make superyachts with incremental manufacturing methods. The use of raw materials will be significantly reduced and carbon emissions will be reduced."

Marshall also said: "In general, shipbuilding in the dock will waste 15-20% of raw materials." With 3D printing technology, only 2% of the waste, which can save a lot of raw materials, save a lot of manpower.

Titanium is also used for 3D printing. Marshall believes that titanium is lighter than steel, and that ships made of titanium travel faster and more energy-efficient. If the interior of the 3D printing yacht also uses titanium metal, it can be covered with wood or stone, so that it can be fireproof. The melting point of titanium is about 300 degrees Celsius higher than steel. Titanium is not easily corroded and organisms do not repel (it is because of this that titanium is used to replace human bones), so maintenance costs are lower.

How long will it take to see 3D printed yachts and superyachts? Marshall predicts that titanium 3D printing technology already exists and only needs to be scaled up.

By the end of 2017, the next generation of 3D printers will come out. It can print large-scale components. Marshall said that larger printers will appear in 2020 and their size will increase greatly. By around 2025, we can use a 3D technology to print a 6-meter-long yacht once. He added: "By 2030, we can use 3D technology to print the entire metal structure of the ship and then include the interior."

The speed of manufacturing a 3D printed yacht is very fast. It took two or three years to build a 45-metre-long superyacht. The future may be as short as 90 days.
