Summary:

The demo circuit 1721B is designed with a 14.6V, 5A battery charger and PowerPathTM management 6VIN to 36VIN buck-boost converter LTC4000/LTC3789.

The LTC4000 is a high voltage, high performance controller that converts many externally compensated DC/DC power supplies into a full-featured battery charger. The LTC4000's battery charger features include: accurate (±0.25%) programmable floating voltage, optional timer or current charge termination, NTC thermistor for proper temperature charging, automatic recharge, for deep discharge C/10 trickle charge, dead battery detection, and status indicator output for the battery. In addition, the battery charger has precise current sensing capability to provide a low detection voltage for high current applications.

The LTC3789 is a high performance, buck-boost switching regulator controller that operates with input voltages above, below or equal to the output voltage. The device utilizes a constant frequency, current mode architecture to provide a phase-lockable frequency of up to 600kHz, while an output current feedback loop provides support for battery charging. With a wide input and output range of 4V to 38V (40V maximum) and seamless and low noise conversion between workspaces, the LTC3789 is ideal for automotive, telecom and battery-powered systems.
